There’s never a bad time to visit Puerto Escondido and come and stay at Zandoyo bed and breakfast.
November through April is certainly the best time of year but if you don’t mind a bit of rain, September and June are good months. Weather records show that June’s average rainfall is 346 millimeters compared to September’s 356 (13.6 and 14 inches, respectively). But September also has more days with rain — 13 compared to 11.
But we have now said goodbye — and good riddance — to September. This year has been wet, very wet, so we are looking forward to some respite in October, which is generally considerably dryer. Records show an average 204 mm of rain (8 inches) and only eight rainy days, with high temperatures of 29 C (84 F) and lows of 23 (73 F).
The rainy season is almost over and we are looking to a sunny and dry winter.
Highway news
Anyone who was planning to drive between Puerto Escondido and Oaxaca city on the new highway this fall may have to change their itinerary. The opening date of November 1 is fast approaching but an unnamed state official has told a local media outlet that the highway’s inauguration will be postponed.
We have lost count of the number of times presidents and governors have had made opening date predictions for the new road, which officials say will cut the travel time between Puerto and Oaxaca to as little as 2 1/2 hours.
Mexican President López Obrador said at the end of September he was hopeful that the highway would be ready by the end of November but its completion hinges on negotiating an agreement between two mountain region municipalities. They have been fighting over territory for 47 years and one of them has been preventing work on the highway to advance their cause.
However, travelers can continue to rely on air travel to get here. Four airlines — Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus, Volaris and Aeromar — operate 25 flights a week among them. Most flights are to and from Mexico City’s Benito Juárez airport but Volaris also flies out of AIFA, the new Felipe Ángeles airport.
Things have improved since 2010 when Mexicana, one of our favorite airlines at the time, ceased operating and left Puerto without any flights until Aeromar began flying in here from Mexico City many months later. Those were bleak times for the tourist industry in Puerto Escondido.
