What’s happening at Zandoyo

Zandoyo Bed and Breakfast in Puerto Escondido is an oasis of calm in popular tourist destination

February 23, 2025

We are in the midst of another busy winter season here at Zandoyo Bed and Breakfast in Puerto Escondido, where we continue to welcome visitors from around the world. We have had some great visits with singles, couples and families all looking for a quiet vacation, sand and sunshine, good food and Mexican culture. And Puerto Escondido offers all that and more!

The opening of the new highway to Oaxaca has resulted in a steady influx of visitors year round, meaning more people on the beaches and more traffic on the roads.  But it has also brought new hotels, restaurants and other businesses, providing more employment opportunities for locals and greater choice for visitors.

And in the middle of it all, conveniently located close to everything you need, Zandoyo continues to be an oasis of calm!

One holiday in Oaxaca, two great destinations

As expected, the new highway, which has reduced travel time to Oaxaca city to just over three hours, has become a great boon to visitors. In fact, more than half our guests are coming from Oaxaca city when they arrive or they are going there after staying with us. Be aware, however, that there can be delays. Construction work continues and there is always the possibility that local residents along the route will shut it down as a protest against government action – or inaction, as the case may be.

If you are planning to use the highway ask us about current conditions and whether closures or blockades are a possibility.

Puerto gaining recognition as a destination with great food

Oaxaca city has long been known as an international culinary destination but Puerto Escondido is beginning to enjoy some of that fame. There are many great restaurants within just a few blocks of Zandoyo, and two of those have received special recognition. Almoraduz is listed in the Michelin Guide, and both Almoraduz and Metxcalli are among the top 250 restaurants in Mexico according to the Mexican Gastronomic Guide 2025. From Zandoyo, Metxcalli is a three-minute walk and Almoraduz seven minutes.

At Zandoyo we are proud of our own culinary efforts but have no expectations beyond five-star reviews by our guests, and we are very happy to have those. We are continually adding to and tweaking our breakfast offerings, a process in which our new assistant cook plays an active role.

Angelina, our newest guest room

Another new addition is our second-floor guest room Angelina, named after Mane’s mom, bringing us up to five rooms in total. The room has a queen bed and a nice view of the neighborhood park in front of the house. And with windows on both sides it enjoys nice cross breezes to cool the room at night. Like our other rooms, Angelina has a queen bed, ceiling fan, air conditioning, en suite bathroom and free WiFi. Read more about Angelina here.

What our guests are saying

An excellent place, with exceptional attention. From the moment they welcomed us they were extremely attentive to everything. The breakfasts are exquisite. It is in a very quiet area without any noise, with very good restaurants nearby. If what you are looking for is to disconnect and rest, it is the best option.
